Project GROW is part of the Australian Government’s Primary Care Enhancement Program, which aims to improve health outcomes for people with intellectual disability. The program supports healthcare professionals, disability providers and people with intellectual disability to strengthen access to inclusive, person-centred healthcare and improve confidence navigating the health system.
Project GROW
Project GROW delivered targeted education and quality improvement initiatives to strengthen the capacity of primary care and Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers to deliver inclusive, person-centred care for people with intellectual disability.
Seventeen general practices participated in the Primary Care Intellectual Disability Inclusion Program (PCIDIP), which involves two in-practice workshops and two structured quality improvement activities. CESPHN provided hands-on support to help practices build confidence, systems, and processes for delivering accessible, high-quality care. 100% of participants reported they would recommend the program.
CESPHN also delivered two full day interactive education workshops to SIL providers, focused on building confidence to support, communicate, and advocate for people with intellectual disability in healthcare settings. Feedback demonstrated high impact, with participants reporting increased confidence and 100% stating they would recommend the training to colleagues.
A new initiative, the Improving Oral Health Care for People with Intellectual Disability Program, was developed in consultation with oral health professionals and will be rolled out in 2026-2027.
These initiatives contribute to a more inclusive health system that responds to the needs and rights of people with intellectual disability.
